-This article was a collaboration between myself and Alex Tompkins for the university newspaper back in late ’08. We never submitted it in the end, but it’s up on here for your eyes to feast upon…-

To my devastation, the new ‘Christmas Handbook’ Jack Wills catalogue came through our door recently followed by the ‘Spring Term’ one, addressed to a previous inhabitant of our shared university house. Followed, not long after, by the ‘Spring Term’ catalogue, an unwanted piece of mail which I’m sure you are all well accustomed to receiving.

I began scanning through the Christmas catalogue, and I was greeted by photo shoots set against backdrops of regal houses and other typically ‘rich’ settings, boys in Jack Wills rugby shirts, young girls in clothes typically worn by attendants of horse racing events, the bi annual polo meet, or the croquet fundraiser. Jack Wills, placing the claim of ‘University Outfitters’ alongside price tags of over one hundred pounds angers me to the core.

Ultimately, which self respecting 18 year old prances around in nothing but an overpriced, woolly knitted Christmas number, a skimpy pair of undies and some mockup-ugg-boots, making out with their 28 year old model boyfriend who is wearing essentially the same, next to a Christmas tree and roaring open fire in the local country manor..? The catalogue suggests these activities are somewhat normal for a student.

"... Tarquin and I tend to role with just the three tee shirts.'

Three reasons why I have deep-seated issues with the above:

Number One – Fundamental values of the student – Budget Mentality

Traditionally the fundamental values of the student centre around budget, getting by on as little as possible and the fun that comes with this. Everyone is familiar with the 10 second rule, curried beans, and the old adage ‘the sell by date is still good for a week or two it’s a sell by date’. Heck, I once heard someone even say they used a connie twice in a weekend. Essentially, learning to budget, cook, clean and all the rest, is a considerable slice of the university pie. The demographic simply can’t afford a butler to do it for them.

The ‘University Outfitters’ over at Jack Wills seem to have neglected these core values, the prices ringing in at crippling £69 for a simple rugby shirt, £49 for a polo shirt, £69 for a normal shirt, and £98 for a pair of jeans… University outfitters? The cheapest thing in the Jack Wills catalogue is £19, lets face it: who wants to spend nineteen pounds on a pair of boxer shorts? This would buy you nine pairs of boxers in Primark.

I conclude this section with my disgruntlement aimed at those clobbered-up with JW merchandise who aim to look scruffy with loosely tied up hair or the hem of their tracky bees frayed and mud stained… You paid a wedge for those garments and have gone to more effort to look like you don’t care than if you did – 0h the paradoxical irony is not lost on me. So take care of them and wear them proper.

Number Two – Fundamental values of the student – Arts

'.. whereas Perry tends to crack four tee-shirts. Needless to say, three of the collars are popped.'

The second issue that I take with Jack Wills clothing is the promotion of the wealthy British archetype, which I feel is in complete contradiction of the value of being a young student, protest mentality and passion for the arts and sciences. When was the last time you witnessed a great artist or a musician in clothes ready to go clay pigeon shooting or dressed up in the rugger shirt ready for a good old pimms on the deck? Why are we embracing this sterile abandonment of all values of youth and paying top dollar for the privilege?

If we put this in a case study: A kid growing up is passionate about music, for example, and traverses adolescence wearing denim jeans, band tee shirts, hitting high fives, and saying dude as much as is humanly possible. Why? Because he idolises the people who are in the bands, who are making their living playing music, he wants to do the same. On this basis, the kid growing up wearing Jack Wills, a company who appear to openly promote the conservative, upper class and privatised lifestyle, surely is embracing an aspiration to become the very same. I find this a worrying concept, knowing full well the public funding cuts that the conservative party(ies) want to implement, especially in the healthcare sector – keeping the rich richer and the poor poorer. Furthermore, these students are meant to be the future cream of Britain, should they not know better?

Don’t get me wrong I like rugby, I have no problem with people wearing their national or club rugby shirt (ringing in at 40 pounds), but why would you pay 29 pounds over the odds for a rugby shirt with the number 9 on it, with no actual rugby calibre? Bearing in mind that this 40 pounds buys you a specifically engineered professional rugby shirt. I mean, come on, they don’t even look good!

Number Three – Fundamental values of the human – don’t be taken for a fool

44 quid for a knitted scarf, are you shittin’ me?

Thanks to Lord Alexander ‘Spiffing Shot’ Tompkins and Duke Benjamin ‘Pass me the Cravat’ Waterhouse (…ahem) for their input.

As we find ourselves now in full flow of 2009, it’s fair to say it’s appropriate to look at how we entered it.

As fireworks were going off in London, inevitably the bangs and colours were replaced by gunfire and bombs going off in the east. Thousands of soldiers still placed in Iraq and Afghanistan to ‘restore’ peace and democracy, in what is considered by many as an unjust, ill-advised, and illegal war. This followed by promises to end fighting and for troop withdrawal, seemingly never fulfilled. Together with claims of success in the area and declaration of a war ended, it’s no wonder the public are reaching the end of their tether with their governments, who are vehemently claiming they are acting for the benefit of the country. I had realised the other day that this so called ‘War on Terror’ seems only to focus on one culture, one religion, one area of the world, one ‘threat’. Why have they not saught to cease oppression in Africa, or maybe try to put towards fixing some of the internal poverty of their own country. Indeed, let us strip Mugabe of a knighthood with one hand, and hang Sadam Hussein with the other. With the US war ticket pushing $600 billion and homeland healthcare prices and poverty at an all-time high, it looks like ousting the Bush administration came too little too late. Why it failed to happened sooner, I will never know. With the recent inauguration of President Obama, we can only hope that he makes some major changes.

Obama’s first act as President was to fully close Guantanamo Bay prison camp within the year, then to halt any final bills pending from his predecessor; one of which, might I add, was to legalise carrying a concealed weapon in some US public parks. I can’t fathom the logic behind twice electing a president willing to endanger the lives of their population in such a way in the first place… So let’s watch what happens with Obama’s promises of new healthcare and poverty bills, the keystone to his election campaign, with crossed fingers.

It seems that today governments are forgetting who they are leading.. they are forgetting about the people who chose them, and thus distancing themselves. Television bigwigs cast their own political views across entire stations and as a result we rarely receive a balanced view of what’s actually happening. We are living in a world where people don’t always have time to find out what their candidates are proposing or reviewing the manifesto of one, let alone several parties. This paired with the fact that many people either find the world of politics so intimidating and boring that they are disinterested, or that they simply don’t understand. It’s about time we got up and did something about it… So what can we do about it.. how can people become enthused about their part in forming a country that looks after its people?

I have lived with no tv now for about 6 months and I don’t feel I am behind the times or that I have particularly missed out on anything. My reason is predominantly one: the internet. Yes, the internet. I believe people should work towards using the internet to its fuller potential… I’m not talking about reading Wikipedia ‘cover to cover’, I’m referring to news, politics, and current affairs sites. We happily go online to do our shopping, look at reviews of the latest gadgets and to get advice for that itch that just won’t go away, but so many people will insist on relying on mainstream media as the main source of their news. Why? these sources are the very ones censored to support whatever sordid views their owners have.

Hell, is it any wonder people are launching shoes left right and centre.

Bush ready to take a potential headshot from a loose cannon brogue

Finally people are getting so frustrated with their leaders, and world leaders for that matter, that they are finally starting to do something about it… Granted, footwear based happenings go down a lot more recently than has ever been publicised, but still, in my book its a positive move forward. Maybe small acts will become en masse marches outside parliament, and im not talking about one day a year in May. Maybe people will not only walk their banners where they are told. In Birmingham, UK the designated protest walk route takes you into areas where nobody really goes… Peaceful marches are diverted to areas where no one will be ‘at risk’. A sign of an authority intimidated?…

I feel I have been going on long enough, all I can conclude with is that I can only hail these shoe throwing pioneers as great. What more can one ask for? A view conveyed, the point of a press conference forgotten, comedy value, and the vulnerability of a leader clearly exposed. So come, friends, listen not to the skewed views of the Sky, put down the Daily Express, and start tapping your fingers onto independent news sites, while listening to your favourite song, downloaded as a free torrent.

… and don’t even get me started on ID cards.

Over the past year I had tried to keep a blog going on blogspot and I did, in fairness, manage to keep it going a bit. But i just wasn’t that keen on the interface.. No disrespect but it just wasn’t for me. So I’m back! This time on WordPress, far slicker and easier, for me at least, so hopefully it will give me a bit more enthusiasm to regularly post.

So yeah, that’s that really.

I should also mention that recently there have been some occurrences and worldly goings on, which give me much more I feel I can write about. That, and I plain-old, geekily, enjoy it.

I hope whoever out there in the world might too enjoy it. Comments and things are always welcome whether you agree with what I am saying or not, too. Healthy debate, criticisms and what not are always good for the brain.

WASSUP. Over due I know, but its not been that long eh?!…

So I just got in from a ride and I realise now, after a couple of months of not using my bike, how unfit not riding has made me. Sure, I did go for a few runs, some weeks more committed than others, but christ, I dont think I have done any proper exercise in over 5 weeks, short of walking places. I am a bad man, the kind of bad man that, in the years to come (if i dont step up) will be getting a gastric bypass operation. KAY, maybe not that extreme. But I’m glad I have finally fixed up the ol’ leg powered duo cyclism because I can now properly explore Dartmoor and what it has to offer.

I guess I should explain why I haven’t posted… Basically in the last 5 or 6 weeks, I reckon i have been home for about 2. I have seen hundreds (girlfriend included) of people graduate, I saw an old lady (grandma) turn 80, solid, I aquired a puppy (Pepper), I found a dead woodpecker (Woody), I got a job (!!!)(Wetherspoons (ahem..)), worked in a lab assisting PhD research (seagrass… unpaid), I went to Wales (twice), went to Bristol (thrice), went to Birmingham (brummy), I went to Cornwall (parents), I got some new headphones (Sennheiser) and finally.. I played guitar hero for the first time (rdiculously addictive). That, my friends, is, in a nutshell, what I have been up to. I have also had about 4 arguments, 4 x 14-hour days of work, countless kisses, several hugs, and 3-5 awkward sliences. None, thankfully, on a journey from Bridgend (Wales) to Plymouth, a 2.5-3 hour drive with just me and my grilfriend’s dad.

I think I have pretty much covered everything I have done there. It has been quite good, but im constantly tired and pretty thankful for the couple of weeks I have here until I hit Brecon for Greenman Festival and a caravan stay somewhere else in Wales. Weird, before recently I had been there about.. say.. once; just how I like it. Now, this summer, I will have been about a hundred times (4-5 times).

On a different note, I have been getting into new folk and, due to my new headphones giving me untouchable quality listening, I feel I should give a few a mention.

Bowerbirds (fantastic)
Joanna Newsome (uniquely brilliant)
Johnny Flynn (and the Sussex wit)
Laura Veirs (americanish but good)
Mumford and Sons (probabaly my favourite)
Bon Iver (heart felt)
Laura Marling (getting bigger)
Alela Diane (southern folk)
Defiance, Ohio (American folky punk)

Please check out a couple of those, it really is worth it.

Anything else to report?.. No. Ah yes!: After a kindly comment suggesting a job to apply for I applied and didn’t get it! It’s the first time I have ‘not got the job’ so to speak.. I genuinely think I would have been good too. Oh well. You live and learn.. and set fire to the CEO’s car.

buh.

SKINT. It sucks, we have all been there one time or another, unless you are Jane. Jane is never skint. I think. Anyway, Jane’s ineffable cashflow aside, I must find a job. The only problem is, is that I have (just about) secured some unpaid work experience in biological research, assisting the research in the lab and the field, which has far more long term value when it comes to the cv than a job in a shitty call centre or working for debenhams holding a sign up the street saying “70% off all stuff, thataway! —->”… And that’s the problem, it’s UNPAID so that means that I need to earn elsewhere with what time I have left…. I’m honestly at a wits end of what to do.. Nowhere wants a guy who just needs sporadic work here and there so he can eat. If anyone out there is reading this then please suggest to me something. That said, I must remain positive. Labour Ready (I would link you but it’s really not worth it, honestly) may just pull through for me, but we will see. They offer daily work, call in the morning and hope for vacancies type of thing. and to quote Norman Vincent Peale

“Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that…”

And that, my friends, is exactly the way I shall confront this situation. Even if I have to sell a finger on ebay… or a little toe, a little less valuable, but nonetheless a potential revenue.

In other news I have watch three films recently, all very good in their own right.. here is a short break down:

VERY GOOD VIEWING FOR THE MOST PART

here is a slightly more comprehensive breakdown:

The Kite Runner – very good, tugs on the heart strings but leaves lots out from the book. Lara and Alex cried at least twice. comfortable 8/10

Smokin’ Aces – Balls to the wall action. I liked it, not a bad story too.. easy 7/10

Half-Nelson – Very good indeed. a thinker. comes highly recommended. a solid 8/10

Better? I thought so, never judge me again.

FINALLY, a cooking tip. If you want to make a decent curry but the sauce is from a jar, then use a reputable brand and then add a jar of value curry sauce (Tesco Value, Sainbury’s Basics etc.) if you need extra.. we used Sharwoods and Morrisons super ultra cheap stuff.. very nice indeed. Tried and tested. Good old Morro’s value, is there anything they can’t do?

KAY, im off, I have a beer on the go and a guitar that’s crying out for a play.

Ok, not that foreign, I’m just in Bristol again. I’m due back on Sunday so dont worry. I’m sat in the Geography Department computer room of Bristol Uni, with a baguette and some humous fraudulently being on a computer.. What a badass. I’m like when Mistique (X-Men) gets into the Whitehouse files, or when Hugh Jackman in ‘Swordfish’ is hacking into the Penatgon in a club, getting a blowy and with a gun to his head…This week has been a bit weird, the week before weirder still.. I’d say I have been pretty busy:

I worked the Isle of Wight festival in which the pinacle shifts was a crushing 17 hours long with a 20 min break to catch a couple of songs by The Police and have an argument with my girlfriend, then make up. I was a tough slog that festival, but hey, you gotta help family out from time to time and earn some money so you can eat and other things that being alive requires.

Second, I came home in the middle of the night on monday (from IOW), only to have to get a train to my parents on Tuesday morning, needless to say i was pretty pooped. This was also the first time my gf was meeting my parents so nerves were high and hours on the train were higher. A few landslide ‘Top-Trumps’ victories later and the visit actually went well, I managed to get a bag for 7 quid and my pops cooking is always a treat. Beers and food and laughs were afoot and then more beer and the laughs were at more and more risque jokes. The way an old school night in should be. Everyone seemed to get along and my dad and I drank whiskey until the early(ish) hours. Still, no sleep for Ben for a week and a half so far… And they seemed to like her.

Now I’m sat here having had 2 consecutive full nights sleep, feeling chipper and I have a ball to go to later to test out the new suit (see previous blog).

Righto I had better split, the security guard is eyeing me up and I dont think holding my thumb over ‘UNIVERSITY OF PLYMOUTH’ on my ID card will blag this Bristol based, computer room security cop a third time round..

Adios.

There I was, standing in an unfamiliar city, gun in hand, a man on his knees, back facing me. Was I going to do this?.. Nar.

I was in Bristol this weekend as I was meant to meet the better half’s parents for the first time (properly). There had been a breif encounter of about 5 minutes some weeks earlier but that doesnt count on the account that I’d barely said hello. So you should know that they live in Wales. a solid 3 hours or more from mine, so it’s not likely that I see much of them. But yeah.. we went for a ‘meal’. I dont know why i put it in inverted commas there. We went for a meal.

To add to the pressure of this meeting it was also the birthday of said half..

‘Oh hello ben, what crummy present did you get for my daughter whos knickers you have undoubtedly wormed your way into?’ I thought may be the initiating question. I was wrong. We were taken to a backstreet italian restaurant.. Not unlike ones where a mafia boss might do a person, capiche…Then ended up enjoying a delicious meal and drinking plenty of wine and having a lovely laugh. I have to say, they are a very nice bunch that family. So what did I decide to do? Oh right yeah.. tell a story about how I accidentally drank from a pint of an unknown donors luke warm vomit. GOOD ONE BENNY BOY. You know when you are saying something and everything in your body is shouting ‘shut-the-shit-up-you-massive-bastard!!’ ?.. That’s exactly what happened. But my mouth and tongue kept formulating the story words.

Still, this story actually sat quite well, unbelievable.

I have since been informed that I had done well and I seem like a really nice lad according to a reliable source… what a winner.

In other news… I bought a new suit.

I really want to sit here and tell you about old people… Before I get get so old I become a hypocrite.. But I have noticed a curious level of negativity creeping into my posts so I shouldn’t. Its out of character for me. I swear. So I will get my complaints out the way first, real quick.

i) Psychology department give out extenuating circumstances about as easily and frequently as the guy handing out flyers by Portland Square. I bust my ass at uni to get work in etc, rain or shine, sick or well, hot or cold. Lucky for me I dont do psychology, but I know people that do and also the particular perpetrator who I’m gunna bite my tongue (fingers) not to name. Jerk.

ii) Old people need to go shopping when I’m not shopping… Ridiculously slow, and for people with a wealth of life experience and knowledge, they don’t think very much about whats going on around them.. Please, speed up a little, or stick to the edges of isles.

KAY. that’s out the way. i wish to make a reference to last.fm, it’s awesome. Like a musical community which offers much more than just a specialised Myspace or Facebook. If you are interested in an artist it offers a ‘radio’ which will play a random selection of similar artists. I was listening for well over an hour today so I dont think it has a time limit, but I might be wrong. Anyways, you can also download the application to your computer, which then logs and charts everything you listen to through itunes or other selected players. This allows you to see what tracks are popular amongst friends etc too. Now, for finding new music this is a fantastic idea so everyone should get it, or at least check it out.
